Chapter #3

Chapter #3

Critics. We all know they are just normal folks, but people take what they say to heart! Being a critic, you attempt to be un-bias and fair. Let’s face the facts though; I don’t know one single person who is unbiased completely. We all have opinions and pre-conceived ideas on things, so why some people are so ready do listen to what the critics say? I don’t suppose I will ever know.

The reason critics are there however, are to give an unbiased opinion about a show, movie, play, restaurant, hotel and so many other things! There are times when you are a citric and may not even realize it. Someone you know could ask you about a movie, and depending on what you say about it, it might influence them not to see it! They may never know if that could have ended up being their new favorite movie. Critics can also be very helpful! I got a “critic review” from a friend who drives to Houston Texas a lot and told me about where the good food is and where the clean bathrooms are, and this was extremely helpful on my trip. Most of the time, myself included, when we say the word critic we think of Ebert & Roper; what we really should think of are opinions of people who we trust to tell the truth, such as friends and family.

Emphasis on what the critics say and or write can make or break a person’s career. One bad review could lead the reviewed person to the unemployment line. A good example of this is from an episode from the Gilmore Girls; Rory Gilmore was on the Yale college paper and she was writing a review for the Yale Daily Journal, and gave a very opinionated review of a ballet. This ruined the ballerina’s career even though she had been working toward this goal for many years. The influence the media and everyday people put on critics reviews has great power, but only because we make it so.
